I was born and educated in Wales where I graduated with an honors degree, enabling me to teach English and Drama to students from Year 7 to Year 13. I began my teaching career in 2002 at St Ilan School in Caerphilly, South Wales, where I taught, and had curriculum responsibility for, English and Drama. I was also able to perpetuate my passion for extra curricular work and Drama, through building a successful tradition of school productions, and the ethos surrounding Drama and performance within the school developed into one of excitement, enthusiasm and positivity.
I joined the British school of Chicago team in 2007 and for the past two years I have taught English, within the upper school. I am excited about the inclusion of Drama in this year's curriculum, and look forward to teaching and experiencing this with the students. I am currently Head of English at the school and feel very lucky to be part of this growing department. I have undertaken two very successful ‘book weeks' at the school thus far and through learning activities, such as cross curricular workshops, spelling bees etc... the students have thoroughly enjoyed and benefitted from the exciting experiences that literature can offer. I hope that this year's literacy day will be equally as exciting!
During the past two years at the British School, I have been fortunate enough to direct the students in two, upper school, musical productions, which took place at the local Athenaeum Theatre; "Annie' in June 2007 and ‘Little shop of Horrors' in May 2008. Both experiences allowed students to show case their talents in a variety of areas, from singing, dancing and acting to stage management and prop design. I have been highly impressed by, not only the talent of the students and the impressive results they produced, but also by the commitment and dedication demonstrated by them throughout the challenging, yet highly enjoyable, process of producing a performance. I am excited about the prospect of working with the students to produce new performances in the future.
In addition to my curriculum responsibilities at the school, I also enjoy my role as Year 9 form tutor and Head of ‘Shakespeare' house.
Outside of school, I am relishing experiencing all that Chicago has to offer. I enjoy the theatre, regularly taking advantage of the diverse performances on offer locally. Among other things, I also enjoy travelling and am excited about continuing to visit other places in America in the future.
