ABRSM Exams

The Associated Boards of the Royal Schools of Music is the world's leading authority on musical assessment, actively supporting and encouraging music learning for all. Each year over 630,000 candidates take their examinations in more than 90 countries around the world. ABRSM also runs professional development courses, workshops and seminars for teachers and publishes a wide range of supporting music books and CDs.

ABRSM offers a diverse range of examinations and assessments to meet the changing needs of different learners in today's world. Examinations range from the Prep Test and Music Medals for the earliest stages of learning through to professional diplomas at the highest levels of musical achievement. They encompass examinations for ensembles and choirs, jazz, and provision for adult learners and those with special educational needs along the way.

Graded Music Examinations
ABRSM practical examinations provide a progressive system of assessments beginning with the Prep Test and moving up through eight grades to diplomas. These examinations are designed to motivate students at all levels by providing clear attainable goals.

Graded Theory Examinations
Theory examinations provide assessment of the theoretical knowledge necessary to become a well-rounded musician. We encourage the development of theory and musicianship skills from the earliest stages of instrumental learning. As instrumental skills progress, development in music theory and musicianship become increasingly important in helping students to perform with sensitivity, understanding and confidence.

ABRSM ‘grades' are recognized as international benchmarks and are valued by teachers and institutions across the world. All ABRSM examinations are held here at BMSC, as we are an affiliated testing centre. Students are able to take ABRSM practical and theory examinations when their tutor feels they are ready and these are held at key points throughout the year.
